…I’m not even surprised

I very much anticipated this day (26 November 2011) and I was overly excited to wake up because of: 1) today is my encoding day (where I have to make my schedule for the next term) and 2) my grandma arrives from the USA today.

First of, encoding my subjects wasn’t a breeze. My internet connection chose this day specifically to act up and during online enrollment, sections close in seconds. Long story short, I wasn’t able to get my desired MWF schedule and instead I got a Monday-Thursday schedule with unbelievably long breaks in between my subjects.

My papa fetched me shortly afterward and we were off to the airport. Since my grandma’s aircraft was Cathay Pacific, we had to go into terminal 1. For those of you who don’t know, NAIA’s Terminal 1 airport was voted number 1 worst airport in the world this year from number 5 last year. This was all over the news and all I heard was ‘…improvements are ongoing blah blah’.

This morning, I experienced this first-hand. Of course, we had to go into the ‘Arrivals’ area. Very first thing: we weren’t able to find the entrance to the parking lot. We saw this security guard and asked for directions, and describing this security guard as rude is an understatement.

“Eh sir, baka naman hindi niyo tinitingnan yung sign?! Hanapin niyo yung ENTRANCE! Letter E! Parang itong exit oh, letter E!”

So ano, kami pa ang hindi marunong magbasa at mag-spell?!

We had to get out of the airport area and drive for quite some time before we were able to get back. It was such a hassle! What if it were your first time to travel and you were going to be late for your flight? You’ll never find your way in. We were even lucky it wasn’t traffic. Imagine if it were.

This wasn’t the end of it. Eventually, we were able to park our car and had to go into the waiting area. The very hot, crowded, uncomfortable waiting area. There were air conditioners all over the place but none of them were working. Unfortunately for us too because the heat today was unbearable.

See that air conditioner? For display purposes only.

We decided to grab something to eat in KopiRoti- ordered Kaya toast, soft boiled egg, and coffee.

Did I mention that this cafe’s workplace doesn’t even look sanitary at all?

If you can see, an air conditioner is also available inside the cafe. But does it work? Of course not! Instead, a wall fan and a ceiling fan is used as a replacement.

This waiting area wasn’t even adequate, what more the airport itself?! How can officials / management say that they’re improving the place when none of those improvements are seen or felt by the public?

On the way out, my papa couldn’t resist going back to talk to the security guard we first met on the way to the airport. Instead of apologizing for the inconvenience, he acted as if we were the ones saying sorry! “Sige sir, wala na yun. Okay na yun, walang problema!”

Mahirap talaga makipagusap sa tanga.

We Filipinos often complain about all sorts of things in our country. But we ourselves don’t do anything to improve. The airport is one of the necessary things we need to improve on concerning our tourism industry because it is the first thing people see when they get into our country. The service of the people don’t even account for what the place is already. Big improvements start from little steps. Little steps as in, courtesy from the security guards, or even ample ventilation for the areas. We’re not even talking about the airport itself!

Kung ako nga na Pilipino, sobrang frustrated sa nakita ko, paano pa kaya yung mga turista?

Nakakahiya talaga.

Pacquiao vs Marquez 3 with Milk + Tea Station

Today was the Pacquiao vs Marquez 3 match! Papa and I went over to the Gregorio’s to watch the fight on pay-per-view. Personally, I don’t think the results were fair to Marquez’s corner. But in boxing, just in case you didn’t know, the challenger has to convincingly overthrow its opponent before he can be crowned the title.

I got this from Twitter so I don’t know of its credibility

Anyway, the sister of my ninang came over with free drinks (because she owns it!!) from Milk + Tea Station.

They offer a variety of milk teas, fruit teas, tea smoothies, brewed tea, and other iced beverages.

I’ve only tried their caramel milk tea (my favorite!) and of course, I enjoyed it!

Loyaltea Cards are also available! Try Milk + Tea Station now!

B.A.R: Beauty and Rejuvenation

My friend’s sister owns this salon, located at the University Mall (beside McDonald’s) in Taft Avenue, Manila.

Facade of their beauty salon at the 3/F University Mall, Taft Avenue, Manila

B.A.R. presents itself as the only bar-themed salon in the country. The management also promises a modern taste of relaxation! :-)

B.A.R offers to do nail art for just Php 150! I think they also have digital printing on nails, but I’m not quite sure how much that costs.

One straight comfy bench against the wall where customers sit to get their tips and toes pampered! There are built in sinks for foot spas too :-)

Last Wednesday, I tried their Swedish full body massage (Php 300 for an hour, a little expensive than your favorite home service massages).

Massage rooms are located at the 2/F of the store, and I’m sure you’d be surprised as I was when I found out that they could actually give you a great and soothing ambiance for a massage.. Considering it’s in a mall in Taft!

Here’s what the massage rooms look like, only separated by heavy, fuchsia-colored curtains. Authentic massage beds allow for comfort during the actual massage. They also provide you with aromatic oils for that soothing ambiance and feeling.

Review: The full body massage was actually better than I expected. B.A.R. has hired trained personnel to handle massages, so that sure won’t be a disappointment. I also had my upper lip threaded (Php 80) and it went good as well. I haven’t tried their nail pampering services, so I cannot really tell you guys how it goes. But I will, the next time I go there and try their nail services!

Aside from offering nail services and body massages, B.A.R. offers a wide variety of services — from body waxing / threading, to haircuts, to lash extensions.. This salon will sure find a way to fit your needs! :-)

Visit them now!!! :-)

Another video I just found! Aired a couple of minutes ago at ABS-CBN, another way of promoting the Philippines, featuring top tourist destinations (and those that are unfamiliar but just as beautiful!) and delicacies.

Our favorite Japanese restaurant: Omakase!

This Spicy Tuna Salad is to die for! Ask for extra wasabi for an additional kick! (Php 215.00)

My most favorite Japanese dish forever, Unagi Kabayaki. (Php 295.00)

What’s a Japanese meal without Salmon Sahimi? (Php 215.00)

Omakase is probably known for their imaginative take on sushis and makis. We try to order different kinds for every meal. For this night, we ordered Deep Blue Sea (Php 280.00). It has salmon, tuna, unagi, and kani shreds on top!

For an almost-authentic Japanese restaurant with reasonably priced (or even lower than expected) dishes, Omakase is definitely worth a try! :-)

Omakase Branches:

Alabang Town Center, Casa Susana Bldg (02) 771-1443

Ayala Triangle Gardens, Makati Avenue, Bel-Air (02) 467-3150

Greenhills Shopping Center, Connecticut Arcade (02) 470-9807

Il Terrazzo Mall, UG/Level 1, Tomas Morato (02) 332-4115

Libis: Interpid Plaza Bldg, Unit 207, E. Rodriguez Jr. Avenue (02) 437-0075

How to: Create that no makeup look

When we ask guys what their ideal girl is, usually, the word simple is on the list. When we ask them to define simple, it usually means that the girl shouldn’t put on makeup.

Wrong.

What guys mean is that they want that no makeup look. There are a number of ways you could do it, but here’s how I do mine :)

Consider yourself lucky because I never post pictures of me without any makeup on! Haha, just kidding. Anyway, here’s how I look like without anything on my face.

The first thing you wanna do is moisturize. Choose a day cream that’s compatible with your skin type. As for me, I use Nivea Visage Sparkling White Day Care.

I’m the kind of girl who puts foundation daily. But I also want my skin to breathe so I use a light one with little-medium coverage, Maybelline New York Clear Smooth Aqua Foundation in Natural Beige. Make sure to cover every bit of your face and don’t leave out the hairline. You can also put concealer afterwards for pimple marks, etc.

Next thing I do is draw my eyebrows out. If you noticed in the previous photos, my eyebrows are practically non-existent. Shaped brows frame your face and give you a better look so master how to do this if you have thin brows. If you have thick brows, be sure to groom them :) Shaping your brows also takes a lot of practice! It takes time to master it using different mediums (brow shadow, pencil, etc). In my case I used Maybelline’s brow powder.

I didn’t take a picture anymore but I brush on mineral powder after the brow step. I use Maybelline New York Clear Smooth Minerals in Natural Ochre.

It’s an optional step, but you might want to brush on brow gel or clear mascara over your newly shaped / drawn brows to keep them in place ;)

Only if you want to, you can dust highlighter on the inner arches on your brows, inner corner of your eyes, and lower lash line. It doesn’t show much on the picture, but it glimmers in the sunlight! :)

If you haven’t mastered this step yet (eyeliner on the upper lash line), I suggest you give it more practice. It would only hassle you to make mistakes, especially if you’re using a waterproof liner. I do this to brighten my eyes and give it more definition. You can use whatever liner you want. On a daily basis though, I prefer using a pencil liner cause it gives a more smudged look rather than a precise line when using liquid liner.

Curl your lashes!!! Never forget this!!!

Apply your preferred mascara. If you know it’s going to be a hot day and you’ll be in corporate attire like me, use a waterproof formula to avoid “raccoon” eyes. If you don’t have one, coating your regular mascara with a clear one might do the trick. I use Maybelline New York The Falsies Volum’ Express Hydrofuge.

We’re almost done! To give you that glow, apply just the right amount of blush on the apples of your cheeks. Apply your preferred color! Tip: If you feel like you have big cheeks, don’t be afraid to contour your cheek bones by applying bronzer just below the apples of your cheeks. Just make sure to blend it with your blush to avoid harsh lines.

You can skip this step if you want, and you still have created your no makeup look.

To apply a color lighter than your lips, put a bit of foundation or concealer on those puckers to even it out with your skin color. I just use residue foundation from my foundation brush.

Apply your preferred color :)

Now scroll up to first picture….

And compare it with this one:

Lastly, put down your hair and flash those pearly whites!! We’re done! ;)

If you still think absolutely no make up is the best way to go…

Well, I don’t know what to say about that! :)
